Getting To Know The Dominican Republic

Doing Research

The Dominican Republic takes over two-thirds of the island Hispanola. This country was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1492. It was named La Espanola. Four years later in 1946 Santo Domingo was founded and is the oldest European Settlement in Western Hemisphere. Santo Domingo is relevant to this day and has become the Captial as well as the largest city in the Dominican Republic. I was able to watch some documentaries during my research to get a better picture fo how their society and place are. Some impressions I was able to get was that the country is very beautiful and has some very tasty looking food. It was rich in culture and had some amazing natural sights. The water has it's own surprises and is something that anyone would look forward to. They have underwater sightings which are considered underwater museums.

Political Issues

The country where the Dominican Republic is located in on the island Hispanola and is shared with the country Haiti. They are very similar yet different. You would think that because they are so close that they would get along but they don't. They hate each other for the most part. Their hate towards each other dates back to the 1600s. They have a lot of complicated history which is the result of today's issues. This issue seemed a great topic to talk about in which I could go into more detail about how it all began.

Race Issues

With the whole Dominican Republic and Haiti hating each other racism comes with it as well. Although the two are black The Dominican Republic is still racist to those of Haiti. They discriminate on Haitians because they are darker even though they're both black at the end of the day. This can be classified as both racism and Xenophobia. A lot of these issues have caused violence and tensions that have gotten other counties such as the U.S worried. I think this topic would be interesting to dive into seeing that despite both being black they still hate each other.
